The Story
Here it is: the fifth wine in our skin-contact progression, and what a bottle it is. When we were walking the floor at ProWein in Düsseldorf in 2024, this was the very first bottle from Fedora that we instantly fell in love with. It narrowly missed the cut for our dedicated Slovenia box earlier this year, but it was simply too good not to buy. We are absolutely thrilled that it now gets the spotlight in this Orange edition! While we started this box with very light, short macerations, we are making a serious jump here. Valter (whom you can recognize by his namesake fedora hat) and Mojca Kobal work in the Vipava Valley with a profound respect for nature, following biodynamic principles. For their exclusive 'Alda' line—a boutique selection with labels personally designed by their son Žan—they let this Malvazija ferment on the skins for a full three weeks. It beautifully showcases how traditional Slovenian winemakers approach orange wine: with immense patience and a fearless yet elegant attitude towards skin contact.
The Vibe & Tasting Notes
Thanks to those three weeks on the skins, this wine has developed remarkable depth and a gorgeous, deep golden-yellow to almost amber hue. On the nose, you are immediately greeted by ripe, lush aromas of apricot, orange, white peach, and a hint of Mediterranean herbs. Make no mistake though: despite the extensive skin contact, the wine remains crystal clear and incredibly elegant. On the palate, it is full-bodied and almost creamy, yet perfectly balanced by a fresh salinity and fine, dry tannins (the 'grip' from the skins). This is a serious, gastronomic orange wine that begs for good food. Serve it slightly warmer than a standard white wine and pair it confidently with Mediterranean dishes, grilled fish, or a nice piece of poultry.

Why natural wine costs more, and why it’s worth it
-
No shortcuts
Growers who refuse pesticides and chemical additives accept that they’ll lose a significant part of their harvest to weather, disease, and unpredictable nature, but they do it to keep their wines pure, alive, and honest.
-
Risk and loss
Nature swings between plenty and scarcity; frost, hail, heat and ferments can erase volumes, fewer bottles must carry the farm’s costs, with ageing measures adding expense to keep the wine clean and true over time.
-
Integrity and handwork
Hands replace chemicals: they weed, manage canopies, pick, and sort by hand; presses and gravity moves protect texture, while cleanliness and patient ageing deliver purity without shortcuts, increasing labor but preserving integrity in every bottle.
