The Story
For the fourth step in our orange journey, we head to the hilly region of Istria in Croatia. Here, the family behind the Veralda winery crafts this incredible, fully organic 'Ambra'. While the previous wine had ten days of skin contact, we are shifting into a much higher gear here. These local Malvasia grapes ferment on their skins for a full four weeks, before aging gracefully in oak barrels. The result is a complex, layered wine that truly explores the depths of the orange style. It is a stunning, classic example of the Croatian natural wine tradition and the ideal stepping stone before we hit the heavy, tannin-rich bottles that close out this box.
The Vibe & Tasting Notes
The name is a dead giveaway: this wine pours into your glass with a brilliant, deep amber sheen. Thanks to the extended maceration and oak aging, the Ambra boasts a rich, almost viscous texture. On the nose, you will immediately discover a wealth of aromas, including dried figs, apricot, honey, and warm spices like cinnamon and coriander. Despite that immense fullness and the soft tannins extracted from the grape skins, the wine retains an impressive freshness and a salty minerality. It owes this tight tension to the distinctive white clay and calcareous soils where the vines are rooted. This is a robust gastronomic wine. Put it on the table alongside a hearty stew, earthy mushroom dishes, or aged cheeses, and prepare to be amazed.

Why natural wine costs more, and why it’s worth it
-
No shortcuts
Growers who refuse pesticides and chemical additives accept that they’ll lose a significant part of their harvest to weather, disease, and unpredictable nature, but they do it to keep their wines pure, alive, and honest.
-
Risk and loss
Nature swings between plenty and scarcity; frost, hail, heat and ferments can erase volumes, fewer bottles must carry the farm’s costs, with ageing measures adding expense to keep the wine clean and true over time.
-
Integrity and handwork
Hands replace chemicals: they weed, manage canopies, pick, and sort by hand; presses and gravity moves protect texture, while cleanliness and patient ageing deliver purity without shortcuts, increasing labor but preserving integrity in every bottle.
