The Story
For the fourth bottle, we return to the 29 year old Joni in Limburg. With the first bottle, we already shared our vision on 'real' Dutch wine and how Joni works with the finest materials from across the border. This Kerner might just be the ultimate example of that philosophy. Joni sources these biodynamically grown grapes from his good friend Hannes Bergdoll in the German Pfalz region. They come from thirty three year old vines deeply rooted in a limestone terroir. Once the grapes arrive in Tegelen, Joni lets nature take its course. He deliberately ferments the juice at a relatively cool temperature to preserve that crisp energy, and then lets the wine rest on stainless steel tanks for nine months. The result is bottled unfined and unfiltered. With a total production of just 1358 bottles, this is a beautiful, highly limited piece of craftsmanship.
The Vibe & Tasting Notes
The cheerful label with the lemon is a dead giveaway: this Kerner is zesty, crispy, and incredibly fresh. From the very first sip, this is a dangerously drinkable thirst quencher. It is popping and expressive in the glass, yet remains incredibly refined and accessible at the same time. On the nose, you are greeted by vibrant aromas of citrus, green apple, and an elegant hint of jasmine. This is quickly followed by a warm tropical breeze featuring notes of ripe mango and lime. Because of its unfiltered nature, the wine also has a wonderfully soft texture that perfectly balances the tight acidity. Chill this bottle down properly to about seven or eight degrees Celsius and enjoy some pure, liquid energy.

Why natural wine costs more, and why it’s worth it
-
No shortcuts
Growers who refuse pesticides and chemical additives accept that they’ll lose a significant part of their harvest to weather, disease, and unpredictable nature, but they do it to keep their wines pure, alive, and honest.
-
Risk and loss
Nature swings between plenty and scarcity; frost, hail, heat and ferments can erase volumes, fewer bottles must carry the farm’s costs, with ageing measures adding expense to keep the wine clean and true over time.
-
Integrity and handwork
Hands replace chemicals: they weed, manage canopies, pick, and sort by hand; presses and gravity moves protect texture, while cleanliness and patient ageing deliver purity without shortcuts, increasing labor but preserving integrity in every bottle.
