The Wine & Winemaker

  • Winemaker: Laurent & Pauline (L'Austral)
  • Region: Saumur, Loire Valley, France
  • Grape: 100% Chenin Blanc

The Story We are closing the box with the Treillaujeard 2023. Let's be honest, it is probably the hardest name to pronounce in this entire Loire edition, but my god, is this bottle worth the effort. When we first tasted this wine, we were absolutely convinced Laurent had blended some Chardonnay into it. It beautifully captures those rich, buttery, and vanilla notes you would normally look for in a classic white Burgundy. But the reality is even more impressive: this is a pure, 100% Chenin Blanc from old vines, aged extensively in oak barrels. It is quite literally the best of both worlds: the opulence of oak aging, combined with the stunning, crystal-clear minerality and crispness of the Loire.

The Vibe & Tasting Notes The Treillaujeard is a luscious, layered white wine that plays a brilliant trick on your senses. On the nose and the first sip, you get the rich, round notes of oak, light butter, and a hint of vanilla. But where a heavy, oak-aged wine can sometimes become tiring, the lively acidity and tight minerality of the Chenin slice right through it perfectly. The result is a full-bodied, serious wine that remains incredibly fresh and highly digestible. This is a wine you simply have to taste; we cannot recommend it highly enough. Serve it confidently alongside a rich fish dish or a creamy pasta, and enjoy.

  • No shortcuts

Growers who refuse pesticides and chemical additives accept that they’ll lose a significant part of their harvest to weather, disease, and unpredictable nature, but they do it to keep their wines pure, alive, and honest.

  • Risk and loss

Nature swings between plenty and scarcity; frost, hail, heat and ferments can erase volumes, fewer bottles must carry the farm’s costs, with ageing measures adding expense to keep the wine clean and true over time.

  • Integrity and handwork

Hands replace chemicals: they weed, manage canopies, pick, and sort by hand; presses and gravity moves protect texture, while cleanliness and patient ageing deliver purity without shortcuts, increasing labor but preserving integrity in every bottle.
