The Wine & Winemaker
- Winemaker: Visintin family (Veralda)
- Region: Brtonigla, Istria, Croatia
- Grape: 100% Malvazija Istarska
The Story
Veralda from the Istrian village of Brtonigla is famous for daring to challenge regional winemaking conventions. With Ambra, they demonstrate how a classic grape like Malvazija Istarska can transform into a stunning amber wine brimming with character. The Visintin family works exclusively organically on their rare soils of white and red clay. They let nature completely dictate the pace, avoiding chemical interventions and artificial additives in the cellar.
The name Ambra is a direct reference to the breathtaking, warm amber hue the wine naturally gains through extended skin contact. By allowing the skins to ferment alongside the juice, they capture not only the striking color, but also the rich depth of the Istrian sun.
The Vibe & Tasting Notes
The Ambra 2021 is a surprisingly approachable, yet impressively layered skin contact wine. In the glass, it shines with a warm, golden amber glow. On the nose, you will discover seductive aromas of dried apricots, candied citrus, ripe quince, elderflower, and a touch of honey alongside dried Mediterranean herbs.
The palate feels beautifully structured with soft, ripe tannins and a remarkably refreshing acidity. The salty minerality from the nearby Adriatic coastline gives the wine fantastic length and an invigorating lift. An exceptional companion for grilled vegetables, aged goat cheese, or a rich seafood paella on a warm summer evening.

Why natural wine costs more, and why it’s worth it
-
No shortcuts
Growers who refuse pesticides and chemical additives accept that they’ll lose a significant part of their harvest to weather, disease, and unpredictable nature, but they do it to keep their wines pure, alive, and honest.
-
Risk and loss
Nature swings between plenty and scarcity; frost, hail, heat and ferments can erase volumes, fewer bottles must carry the farm’s costs, with ageing measures adding expense to keep the wine clean and true over time.
-
Integrity and handwork
Hands replace chemicals: they weed, manage canopies, pick, and sort by hand; presses and gravity moves protect texture, while cleanliness and patient ageing deliver purity without shortcuts, increasing labor but preserving integrity in every bottle.
